In Newfoundland and Labrador, Discovery Day is celebrated on the nearest Monday to June 24. This year, Discovery Day falls on Monday, June 25, 2018. While Discovery Day is a paid holiday for government employees in the province, it is not a statutory (public) holiday under the Labour Standards Act. That said, however, in the private sector, Discovery Day can be a discretionary day off with or without pay granted to employees by their employer.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Discovery Day commemorates Giovanni Caboto’s (a.k.a. John Cabot) discovery of Newfoundland in 1497.
