Fostering gold medal performances in your organization

It’s been hard to miss the Olympics, and face it, who would have wanted to miss the exhilarating, elegant and extreme gold medal performances of the 2014 Sochi Olympics! Canadian athletes came out on top of the podium in multiple events including the nail-biting women’s gold medal hockey final and Alex Biloudeau’s flawless repeat gold medal run in moguls skiing. Russia had some incredible performances in figure skating from both an aging star and an emerging one in the team skate event.  Both Canada and Russia performed very well in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Gender wage gap is decreasing … but is it decreasing enough?

I just read a Statistics Canada report stating that the gender wage gap has recently been decreasing. The report briefly noted that between 1988 and 2008, the wage gap narrowed throughout the wage distribution. However, the gap shrank the most at the lowest end of the wage distribution, and the gap shrank the least at the upper end. Also, although women dramatically increased their representation in high-wage occupations such as management, there were still significant gender wage gaps within these occupations.

Are you required to have a pay equity plan?

One purpose of Pay Equity is to redress differences in compensation due to systemic gender discrimination suffered by persons who occupy positions in predominantly female job categories. Only the provinces of Quebec and Ontario have pay equity legislation that covers the private sector. The Pay Equity Act in each province requires employers with 10 or more employees to provide equal pay for work of equal value.
