Thanksgiving Day, public holiday

Thanksgiving Day in Canada occurs on the second Monday in October every year. This year, Thanksgiving Day falls on Monday October 10. Thanksgiving is a public (statutory) holiday in all provinces and territories, except for the Atlantic provinces. Employees get a day off with regular pay or public holiday pay (depending on the province or territory of employment).

First Monday in August, also known as Civic Holiday and other local names

The first Monday of August is a general holiday for employees in many parts of Canada. It is a public (statutory) holiday in some provinces and territories, but in others it has another legal status. It is often called the “August Holiday”, “Civic Holiday”, “Simcoe Day” (around Ontario), “Provincial Day”, “Heritage Day”, “Natal Day”, or other local names.

Canada Day/Dominion Day, a public national holiday

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General Lord Monck called upon all Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

Family day across Canada

All jurisdictions in Canada provide for a number of public (also called statutory or general holidays) holidays each year. Some are common to all jurisdictions; others are specific to individual provinces and territories. Family Day is a public holiday under provincial employment standards legislation, observed the third Monday in February every year in five jurisdictions in Canada.
