First Monday in August a.k.a Civic Holiday: Public holiday or not?

In most parts of Canada, the first Monday of August is recognized as a holiday. This year, the first Monday is August 1. Although most commonly referred to as “Civic Holiday”, the holiday is referred to differently across Canada. The name of the holiday is not the only thing that differs between the provinces and territories, the legal status of the holiday also varies. That is, in some provinces and territories, the first Monday in August is considered a statutory (public) holiday, while in others it is not.

Nova Scotia government proposes new unpaid leaves under the Labour Standards Code

The Nova Scotia government has tabled a new Bill which proposes to amend the Labour Standards Code to create new unpaid leaves for parents and guardians. If passed, Bill 3, the Support for Parents of Critically Ill or Abducted Children Act, will give employees the right to take the following unpaid leaves:

Proposed citizenship ceremony leave in Nova Scotia

Bill 115, An Act to Amend Chapter 246 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Labour Standards Code, Respecting Citizenship Ceremony Leave received first reading in the Nova Scotia Legislature, and is currently sitting with the Law Amendments Committee. The goal of the Bill is to create an unpaid leave of absence of up to one day under the Labour Standards Code so employment is protected while employees attend their citizenship ceremony.
