Young workers: Staying safe at work

With the summer months beginning this is the time when students are starting new jobs. These young workers and/or new workers are at a high risk for getting injured while at work. New workers are 3 times more likely to be injured during their first month than other, more experienced workers. In Ontario, according to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, between 2009 and 2013, 30 youth workers died in work related incidents and another 30,000 received injuries that led to lost time.

Common sense, health and safety and young workers

A friend of mine told me that she used to believe in common sense until one of her young summer workers put his hand where it wasn’t supposed to go.  Fortunately only a finger was lost and it was able to be re-attached later; but my friend’s philosophical belief in common sense was chopped off forever.

Hockey players and workplace health and safety

Hockey players get paid to be hit. The reverse is also true; many hockey players are paid to hit. For hockey players, violence is part of the job. This job has clearly been taken up a notch this year for the playoffs. Even Sid “the Kid” was renamed “Vicious Sid” in a recent headline.

Can I wear my flip-flops to the worksite?

Self-employment runs in my family. My sister’s 17-year-old is spending her summer days working in the family cabinet-making business. She reluctantly changed into more suitable footwear before heading out the door this morning.
