Amendments to the Employment Insurance regulations
The Government of Canada has expanded access to Employment Insurance benefits. It has done this by eliminating the New Entrants and Re-Entrant (NERE) provisions in the Employment Insurance Act to allow such claimants, with a benefit period beginning on or after July 3, 2016, the same access to EI benefits as all other Canadians.
Employee who rejected severance package awarded six months’ compensation in lieu of notice
A former employee of Staples Canada, who was terminated without cause after almost five years of employment, was awarded six months’ compensation in lieu of notice after she had declined a severance package offered to her by the employer.
Update on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
On June 6, 2016, the Ontario government announced yet further updates to the AODA, which took effect on July 1, 2016. While these changes appear subtle, they do have an impact on Ontario employers and warrant a review of existing accessibility policies, practices and training. (In PDF)
