Workplace religious accommodation: A two-part obligation under human rights

Under the Human Rights Code (Ontario), the duty to accommodate in the workplace is a two-part obligation. Employers who do not make at least a reasonable effort to comply with this obligation can find themselves having to pay a financial price. This was the reality in Qureshi v. Mandatory awareness training for Ontario workers and supervisors as of July 2014!

Christmas has come early for health and safety professionals in Ontario, with the gift of a new law, Regulation 297/13 added to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and filed on November 14, 2013. The regulation is the first of its kind in Canada and mandates that all workers and supervisors must complete basic health and safety awareness training.

Is some form of intervention required in order to address the issue of long-term joblessness?

I read an interesting article that was quite discouraging. Unfortunately, it has been found that more Canadians are remaining jobless for longer periods of time. We are not just talking about workers in the manufacturing sector here; apparently, significant numbers of Canadians have lost their jobs and are experiencing long-term unemployment in areas such as accounting, executive work and education. Also, employment of factory workers is at a 30-year low.
