Québec Court of Appeal confirms application of French language requirements for websites

On December 20, 2017, in 156158 Canada inc. v. Attorney General of Québec, 2017 QCCA 2055, the Québec Court of Appeal confirmed the constitutional validity of the provisions of the Québec Charter of the French Language (the CFL) that require the joint or predominant use of French in commercial advertising, packaging and publications, including websites.

Slaw: Quebec bill would require small farms to collectively bargain

Quebec’s new government wants to ensure that all farm workers have the right to unionize and collectively negotiate working conditions with their employers. Minister of Labour Sam Hamad has introduced Bill 8, An Act to amend the Labour Code with respect to certain employees of farming businesses, which would require small farms to let a union represent their employees.

Quebec’s age-based workers’ compensation rule is discriminatory

A Quebec workers’ compensation tribunal has ruled that reducing injured workers’ income replacement benefits at the retirement age of 65 is unconstitutional because it discriminates on the basis of age, contrary to both the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (section 10) and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (section 15).
