Dismissal of employees caught smoking marijuana at work upheld

In light of the upcoming legalization of recreational marijuana, this case is a reminder that employers have the right to set rules for the use of recreational marijuana in the workplace in much the same way that employers currently set rules for use of alcohol or medical marijuana.

New proposed parental leave (EI) benefit

The federal government has proposed to add an additional option to the EI parental benefits program in Budget 2018 that would allow new fathers or non-birth parents to have access to a longer parental leave by offering additional weeks of benefits.

Workplace harassment as a WSIB claim

On January 23, 2018, the Ontario Grievance Settlement Board provided clarification on when mental stress stemming from workplace harassment due to an employer’s decision or action is compensable under Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
