Celebrating Discovery Day in Newfoundland and Labrador

Discovery DayIn Newfoundland and Labrador, Discovery Day is celebrated on the nearest Monday to June 24. This year, Discovery Day falls on Monday, June 25, 2018. While Discovery Day is a paid holiday for government employees in the province, it is not a statutory (public) holiday under the Labour Standards Act. That said, however, in the private sector, Discovery Day can be a discretionary day off with or without pay granted to employees by their employer.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Discovery Day commemorates Giovanni Caboto’s (a.k.a. John Cabot) discovery of Newfoundland in 1497.
