Findings of investigation: LifeLabs breach

On June 25, 2020, the Ontario and British Columbia Information and Privacy Commissioners just shared the results of their joint investigation regarding a serious breach that took place in 2019 – the findings revealed that LifeLabs, Canada’s largest provider of general health diagnostic and specialty laboratory testing services, failed to protect the personal health information of millions of Canadians.

Ontario proposes regulations on personal health information

On May 2, 2020, Ontario’s Minister of Health proposed making some changes to clarify reporting obligations of health information custodians and also create rules with respect to Ontario Health and Electronic Health Records. Interested individuals may provide written comments regarding the proposed regulation between May 2, 2020, and July 1, 2020.

Health minister announces changes coming to PHIPA in Ontario

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has announced in a news release that it intends to introduce amendments to the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) to strengthen PHIPA and protect patient privacy.
