Vaccination has been touted as the key to a speedy return to normal following the last—seemingly interminable—18 months of pandemic life. With on-again-off-again lockdowns across Canada and wave after wave of spiking COVID cases, it’s encouraging to see provinces, territories and municipalities bolster their vaccination programs.
There is much to consider as we head into a new normal. To begin to reopen now and to return employees to the workplace will take careful planning and appropriate workplace policies and procedures.
The best advice to employers may be to encourage, not mandate, COVID-19 vaccines. Workplace vaccination is a matter of compliance (with health and safety and other legal requirements to keep workplaces safe) and risk management (mitigating the risk that outbreaks could disrupt business continuity).
