The federal government has proposed regulations to permit increased electronic interaction with certain government departments. In 2012, the government amended the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Act to enable the department, and programs under the department's auspices, to expand and coordinate their electronic commerce initiatives.
With 10 years of experience as Privacy Commissioner of Canada behind her, and her term reaching its end, Jennifer Stoddart has released a report titled "The Case for Reforming the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act" which describes how to modernize Canada's private-sector privacy legislation to ensure it is able to meet the current and future challenges of the digital age and protect Canadians’ right to privacy.
As mobile payments continue to take the economic world by storm, so too do the rules and regulations for such payments in Canada. In September, Ted Menzies, Minister of State, announced that the Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry in Canada will be expanded to include mobile payments. He also released a proposed Addendum to the Code for public consultation at this time.
